Inner Door Center®, the world’s only Yoga-Based Eating Disorder Treatment Center in Royal Oak, Michigan, Holds State-Wide Events, Including Partnering with Major Universities, during February’s Eating Disorder Awareness Month
Date:
2013-02-16
State:
MI
Description:
Royal Oak, Michigan (January 16, 2013) – During national Eating Disorder Awareness Month, Inner Door Center® (317 E. Eleven Mile Rd. Royal Oak, Michigan 48067), will be holding events targeted at high school and university students in metro Detroit, Lansing, Ann Arbor and Mount Pleasant to draw attention to the prevalence of a condition which affects up to 24 million people in America. One in 200 people suffer from anorexia which, tragically, has the highest mortality rate of any mental illness; 10% of anorexics die within 10 years of developing the disease.
Inner Door Center® is a comprehensive eating disorder treatment center which treats anorexia, bulimia, binge-eating and diabulimia (a condition where individuals with diabetes misuse their medication). Beverly Price, CEO and founder of the center, created the unique Reconnect with Food® Yoga-Based Eating Disorder Treatment Healing System and has published and presented numerous peer reviewed studies in medical journals and at conferences. She also has a DVD called Reconnect with Food…Unplugged! ($34.95) available at her website, www.innerdoorcenter.com. The school and university events are in part sponsored by Inner Door Foundation, the center’s non-profit organization which promotes awareness and treatment of eating disorders.
Price and her staff – psychologists, therapists, registered dietitians and physicians - are with patients from beginning to end of their treatment cycle, providing partial hospitalization/day treatment and out-patient psychotherapy for eating disorders.
“Eating disorders can destroy lives but so many people don’t understand what the disorders are or that there is effective treatment in Michigan,” said Price, a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist through the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals (IAEDP). “My team is committed to the successful treatment of patients using our unique approach of evidenced-based Mindful Yoga Therapy, and we are improving lives every day. February is an important month for those who struggle, where the national health focus is on Eating Disorders. Our goal is to reach those who remain untreated – only one in 10 people with eating disorders seek treatment - and give them hope for a life not controlled by food.”
Sterling Heights mother Cindy Travis sees Inner Door Center® as a life-saver for her 15-year-old daughter Kayla, who was suffering from a combination of anorexia and bulimia. “She was in denial and angry, but Inner Door taught her to eat again, and then about mindful eating, and the yoga therapy really helped her separate her body from her emotions,” she explains. “She is still early in her recovery but is feeling so much better about herself. As far as I’m concerned, Inner Door saved her life.”
For Wayne State University student, Analena Iacobelli, Inner Door provided a holistic and practical approach that led to her recovery two years ago. “I appreciated the smaller, less clinical surroundings,” she said. “Inner Door’s comprehensive treatment helped me not only physically, but mentally and was great experience during a very difficult time.” She now works at Inner Door with the Reconnect program helping others to stay stable and on track.
Schedule of Eating Disorder Awareness Month programs, which will feature yoga, a discussion relating to yoga and eating disorders, recovery stories from those that Inner Door Center® has successfully treated, ending with a candlelight vigil to commemorate those who have lost their lives to eating disorders, includes:
• Saturday, February 16, 2012, 11:00 am - 1:00 pm High Schools in Royal Oak, Berkley, Madison Heights, Troy, Sterling Heights, Ferndale, Warren, Roseville, Birmingham and Bloomfield Hills.

The film’s motto, “You can't be what you can't see,” underscores an implicit message that young women need and want positive role models, and that the media has thus far neglected its unique opportunity to provide them. The film includes a social action campaign to address change in policy, education and call for socially responsible business

Beyond prevention of eating disorders and obesity…
Promoting Health Instead of Size in Schools
The Healthy Bodies curriculum is aligned with National Health Education Standards. Two published studies have reported the results of the first edition of the Healthy Body Image curriculum. The presentation goal is to help attendees become familiar with the Model for Healthy Body Image and Weight.
The audience will know:
Body dissatisfaction reliably leads to poor and disordered eating, diminished health, and weight gain. Development of body dissatisfaction is a “normal” part of the developmental sequence for children and teens today.
Current research related to the development of body image, eating, fitness and weight concerns in Western culture, including the risk factors in common for negative body image, poor eating behaviors, and rising rates of obesity.
Why prevention efforts must begin earlier than previously thought, and must promote health instead of size as a goal.
Four prevalent cultural myths promote most body image concerns and disordered eating in America, and the "antidotes" needed to develop resiliency in the face of these myths.
A new model for promoting healthy weight related attitudes and lifestyle behaviors. A sampling of the methods and promising results of Healthy Bodies: Teaching Kids What They Need to Know

Date:
2013-02-27
Time:
11:00-12:30
Location:
1205 Bohnam Ave
City:
Council Bluffs
State:
IA
Description:
The vision of the project is to have all body shapes and sizes throughout the school be recognized positively, embraced, and accepted.
The long term goal is to reduce negative parts of the school climate. Specifically, if students are comfortable being at school. Students being comfortable at school can stem out into a whole bunch of categories: student to student relationships, student to staff relationships, and student to self relationships. For example, we want to see a student go from feeling they have no staff member to turn to with concerns, to in the end, feeling they have many.
Plans to achieve the goal is to make students and staff members comfortable with who they are. Which is by hosting a number of activities embracing skills and talents they harbor that do not focus on appearance.
The plan of action or steps is to host numerous activities in the next few months throughout the school that will embrace and support all body shapes and sizes.
One week during February, NEDA Week, February 27th to March 3rd, students and staff members will have the opportunity to learn about eating disorders, the media, self-image, self-esteem and be provided with resources as well. This week will send the message that “everyone knows somebody” with either body image issues, low self-esteem, or an eating disorder.
The whole month of February, there will be a jean drive/donation. Students and staff members donate jeans that will go to local shelter homes. But there will be a twist. The messages of “fit the jeans that fit you, don’t fit the jeans” and “feel comfortable in your own genes”.

Kids as young as 5 years old are putting their health at risk by engaging in dangerous behavior out of desperation to live up to the unrealistic images thrown at them on a daily basis. Where are the negative messages coming from and what's the motivation behind them? What can parents do to encourage strong self-esteem in their children? How can schools help to encourage healthy eating without inadvertently creating fear around food?
Join Marci Warhaft-Nadler of Fit Versus Fiction in this webinar, and learn why it's important to take the focus off of losing weight and put it towards gaining health. Help kids appreciate who they are instead of judge who they think they're not.
Presenter Information:
Marci Warhaft-Nadler is a body image advocate, writer, and founder of the “Fit vs Fiction” project, which is aimed at arming kids with the self-confidence they need to tune out negative messages and be exactly who they want to be instead of who they think they’re supposed to be. She frequently appears in the media breaking down the dangerous myths related to beauty and fitness. She sees the beauty in imperfection and strongly believes: “Self-worth should not be measured in pounds.”

Take an honest look at interpretations of popular research, advertising and media messages about weight and nutrition and learn practical tools for defining and focusing on true health priorities for yourself and others. If you've ever wondered how to focus on health and nutrition without increasing body dissatisfaction or food angst, this presentation will help you on that path. Attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions and engage in discussion following the presentation.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND:
This FREE community presentation is open to anyone interested in learning more about improving nutrition and health amidst the backdrop of the "obesity epidemic" and our culture's obsession with weight-loss. In addition to being particularly beneficial for parents, we highly recommend this presentation for educators and professionals who play an important role in the promotion of healthy eating in schools, organizations, businesses and communities. Individuals who have a history of dieting or disordered eating, negative body image or who simply have an interest in nutrition and health are encouraged to attend. The presentation is appropriate for young adolescents through adults and individuals at any stage of eating disorder recovery.

About SOUTHERN SMASH
Southern Smash challenges women to redefine their worth and beauty by letting go of those perfect numbers that weigh them down.
Founded in November 2012, Southern Smash was created to fill a silent void in our society. Poor body image and negative self-talk have sadly become a cultural norm. In fact, eighty-percent of ten year olds are afraid of being fat. Southern Smash wants to change that heart-breaking statistic. Through SmashTALK panel discussions, handouts, support groups and its unique and empowering scale smashing event, Southern Smash aims to educate the public about the dangers of eating disorders, but also to empower women to celebrate and embrace true beauty and self-love.
Southern Smash is a proud member of the RocketKidz Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit. For more information on the RocketKidz Foundation visit www.rocketkidz.org.
